Every year, I create a calendar with some of my favorite images, to bring the beauty of the natural world inside the homes of my family, friends, and extended network. Given this current political climate and all that many of us have been grappling with, I decided to something a little different this year. While I typically let the images stand alone,
This year's calendar pairs text with the beautiful imagery to focus on hopeful storytelling. The stories I tried to tell highlight the beautiful, the rare, the endemic, and the endangered. These are messages of hope, derived from tales of periled species that recovered from the brink when action was taken to protect them, highlighting humans that help to move the needle, and showing places that provide refuge for creatures big and small. I hope that each month may bring a glimmer of positivity, and remind us all of how much beauty, how much rarity, and how much ecological diversity there is to protect. And, even when the worst seems true, we still have the ability to turn it around if we stand up and fight for what we believe in.
